Freshman Year

  • Challenge yourself with appropriate courses
  • Seek extra help when needed
  • Show colleges you are well-rounded by getting involved in extra-curricular activities
  • Find volunteer opportunities and begin serving others and your community
  • Begin exploring what type of career you are interested in
  • Finish semesters well by refocusing your energy during exams
  • Select a sophomore course load that emphasizes college prep

Sophmore Year

  • Take the PSAT test in October
  • Identify what type and size of school interests you (public, private, state college, university, etc)
  • Refine your essay writing skills by writing frequently
  • Attend college fairs
  • Inquire about Dual Enrollment to see if you are eligible
  • Maintain a high GPA or take steps to improve if needed
  • Choose rigorous junior year courses that will enhance your transcript
  • Continue volunteer activities or consider getting a summer job

Junior Year

  • Study hard! Your junior grades weigh heavily with college admissions offices
  • Take the PSAT (NMSQT) in October
  • Take the ACT prep class offered after school in November
  • Explore colleges by going on the EVA College Road Trip or touring campuses with family
  • Research college costs and tuition at schools that interest you
  • If not already doing so, get involved in extra-curricular activities
  • Take the SAT prep class offered after school in April
  • Take both the SAT and ACT in the spring
  • Compare schools and narrow options to 5-10
  • Ask for letters of recommendation
  • Prepare a college essay
  • After getting your SAT and ACT results, determine which you did the best on and make plans to take it again
  • Construct a strong senior schedule.
  • Work a summer job to gain experience and earn money for college

Senior Year

  • Finalize all college visit plans
  • Find out what the admissions deadlines are for each school on your narrowed list
  • Attend Senior Parent Meeting in September with your family
  • Take the SAT or ACT test again
  • Apply to schools before the deadlines
  • Request that the advising department send transcripts to each school that you apply to
  • Send SAT and ACT scores to all schools you apply to
  • Schedule college interviews if needed for the admissions process
  • Complete FAFSA
  • Decide which school you will attend based on the responses you have received
  • Verify financial aid with the school of your choice
  • Finish your high school career well by approaching coursework and final exams seriously
  • Send final transcript to your school by informing the advising office where you will be attending
  • Arrange housing, attend college orientation, and get a final summer job before beginning college in the fall
